Well, Chrome has got itself killed. the site was suspended on October the 11th due to exceeding its bandwidth. The package has a cap of ten gigabytes per month, and by the sixth had exceeded forty gigabytes. As the entire site weighs in at 107mb, we're talking about the entire site being downloaded almosty forty times a day.

This is due to one of two things -

A: The site is simply much more popular than I thought it would be.

B: I have been subjected to an intentional Denial of Service attack.

Either way, I have had to upgrade the hosting package, which will cost me four times what the prior package did. Which i simply cannot afford.
As all my email is run through the site I've had no choice but to buy the package anyway, but, to be blunt, this means Chrome has one year to live, no more. That is, unless someone has a really good idea that doesn't involve having advertising on the site, or making it a subscription site.

Just to let folks know, Jordan has let me know of an option which could potentially save the site rather neatly.

It's good to know that whilst there are the kind of people in the world who see me churning out hour after hour of hard graft, and offering it up to the world at large free of charge and say 'lets fuck that over, that'll be a good thing to do today' there are a lot more who are happy to help out.

If Chrome comes back, then I'll recommend you each take a look at the Space Monkey #10. 'Nick' sent me an email informing me that I ought to do 'quality over quantity' and expouse his theory that Frank Bonura does more useful work than I do. I replied in my typical fashion, and the next day this evident denial of service attack occurred.

I have no more evidence that this chap is responsible than the timing of the events in question. It would therefore be completely inappropriate for me to publish his email address (nickd189@juno.com).

I would leave it up to all and sundry to make their own minds up, and decide for themselves what, if any, action to take. I certainly couldn't condone signing him up for hundreds of email lists, flooding his inbox with abusive mail or huge attachments, finding his Ip address, home address or any other data and generally expressing your displeasure at Chrome's possibly fatal assault in any other fashion you could dream up.

But if you did, then I'd have to say it would also be terribly poor form to post whatever data you collected and resources acquired, suggestions and tips to a dedicated thread in the Misc section. I'd have to frown on that and certainly delete that thread when I had the time to do so.

Here's not saying I would do any of that.

But if one would happen upon such an opportunity, perhaps one would sign them up for none other than a mailing list to SPAM.com (the food ;).

And then perhaps sign such an email address up to a newsletter for a DDOS website.

And possibly spam Yahoo Answers with "Oh, I want to know, send me an email." and thus publish that email there.

But I'm not saying I would do that.

I'm sorry for the sites (temporary?) demise.
I have been around the forums over at "star wars design alliance"
formerly attached to frank's site.
so when i say that frank can't take any critizism is an understatement.
not to mention his sockpuppet entourage who constantly update him of any
badmouthing in his direction.
he also has a habit of haunting other forums starting trouble over HIS designs being used by the design alliance members which he has somehow copyrighted, despite artistic freedom.......
SO i'm sure he was behind your troubles as he has nothing better to do
but to f$%k people over.

I have really liked your site for some time now ..so here's to your starting back up again

Don't think Frank Bonura would be THAT type of man.
And there's no evidence that he had done it beside your aggressive post...

so why? only want to help? want to start a little "war" between SWDA and Chromeyards?

Hey,
I found this site a few days before it went down, glad to see it's back up. The designs are really impressive!

You may already know about this, but you can use google apps (www.google.com/a/) to manage your email. It uses your domain name and gmail's interface. I don't know the details of your host, but it seems like it'd make your email stuff bombproof in case anything like this happens again.

Anyway, thanks for all the work you've put in to this site, it's great.

Well, I assume the 404s and the Litespeed server means you transferred over to the host I recommended?

Hope the transfer process goes smoothly!

Yes, we're on the move. Freezone are being pigs about various things, so it's not going smoothly per se, and I'm buggered if I can figure out what the hell's going on with my email, but I am sure in a week or two this will all be settled.

We have successfully moved!

My eternal thanks to Jordan for pointing me in the right direction, as ought to be obvious, never let it be said that Chrome doesn't recognise such matters.

Further thanks to all who offered help advice or concern.

I only made a suggestion based on my own experience. GeekStorage is a good host with great customer service. Just trying to help out, that's all.

I'm glad the move went successfully.

I have run several long standing D6 campaigns over the years. Your site is awesome and you have literally saved me hours of time drawing up my own designs for the various ships in my last two campaigns. (Yours are much better quality as well.)

I am part of a large organization of D6 SW GMs who link our SW Galaxies together through our PCs actions. Several of these GMs, like me, work within the IT Security sector. If you're getting DOS, SYN Flooded, or any other type of attack, let me know what info you can, I'll see what I can do.

You have friends in the US, even if we are War Mongering Rednecks. (A joke, please take it as such.) You may want to look into Google advertisement banners. I work with several sites that support themselves that way.

You may also want to setup a paypal donation section just to cover cost. Perhaps drawing out a particularly popular ship or some other such promotion. I'd be willing throw a few bucks your way and I'm probably not alone.

Hope things work out for you.

Actually thisd morning I got an email that might offer a less hostile explanation. It seems Chrome at some point became one of the rotated sites at StumbleUpon.com. It is just about conceivable that the traffic splurge would be accounted for with that. In anycase, the GeekStorage hosting I now have is both vast and protected, so I'm feeling pretty secure here.

One of the basic tenets of Chrome is that it will never be ad supported. If I can't do it myself, I'll take the site down myself.

I'd consider having paypal in my life again just as soon as they repay the millions upon millions of dollars they stole from charitable donation accounts for such events as hurricane Katrina, with full interest, and preferrably with matching sums of cash. Unless that happens, they are, AFAIAC, child-murdering souless cunts of the first order. Actually, even if that did happen, their actions killed hundreds of people needlessly, I'm not sure they can ever be free of that blame.

But I do appreciate the concern, and I do know I have at least a few warmongering redneck fans out there ;-)
